Doll collecting has been a favorite hobby of toy and doll lovers since many centuries. The early dolls were made out of porcelain, with delicately painted features and wigs made of real hair. Dolls were made by hand in those days and collected for their beauty, cultural representation and uniqueness. Today, people collect dolls in America for various reasons. One is to flaunt the most expensive doll in one’s collection. This is an expensive hobby, however. Whatever you like to collect – priceless vintage dolls, dolls covered in diamonds, or extremely hard to get first editions – you will have to shell out a pretty penny. Here are the five most expensive dolls of all time.

1. Most Expensive Doll #1

Price: $ 6,250,000

Name: The bird Trainer, L’oiseleur in French

This doll stands a mere 2 meters high, and is dressed in renaissance clothing embroidered in the designs popular during the French renaissance. This luxury doll plays “The March of Rois” composition, with its fingers actually moving on a flute. The doll holds two birds, which sing the song at the same time. The birds add to the beauty of the doll by moving flapping their heads and moving their heads, creating a cacophony of orchestrated beauty. The beauty of this doll is that it doesn’t operate using electricity. You’ll need a golden key to turn this doll on, and all the synchronized movements take place because of spring-driven gears and cogs.

2. Most Expensive Doll #2

Price: $ 5,000,000

Name: Madame Alexander’s Eloise

Some great names got involved in the creation of this exquisite doll, which is one of a series of 5 hand-made toys meant for charity. 9 carats of diamonds were provided by Harry Winston, the watch manufacturer. The prominent designer Oscar de la Renta designed doll-size creations out of precious furs, while the dress was made by none other than Christian Dior himself! The accessories were designed by Katherine Baumann using Svarowsky crystals.

3. Most Expensive Doll #3

Price: $500,000

Name: Diamond Barbie

This famous Barbie is the most expensive Barbie that was ever created. This doll wasn’t meant for any little girl’s doll house; it was meant to be a collector’s item. Stefano Canturi designed this Barbie; gifting her 1 carat pink diamond heckles. This Barbie is dressed in a stunning black strapless gown. Sold at the famous auction house Christie’s 2010, the diamond is what makes this doll the costliest doll ever sold at an auction. The proceeds of the auction were given to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

4. Most Expensive Doll #4

Price: $200,000

Name: Original G.I. Joe

Every little boy’s dream – to own a G.I. Joe. This tough looking military character, made to represent the quintessential American combat hero was first created during the 1970s. Hasbro, famous toy manufacturer brought this G.I. Joe to life. The very first G.I. Joe is called the ‘original G.I. Joe’ and is now part of a private collector’s enviable collection. The reason this doll is priced at $200,000, way more than the $4 that the newer G.I. Joes are sold for, is because this is the very first G.I. Joe ever made. G.I. Joes come in different avatars: there’s the Navy Sailor, the American Soldier, A Navy Sailor, the Marine and the Air Force Pilot.

5. Most Expensive Doll #5

Price: $ 8,000

Name: Kestner’s Hilda

Kestner, the world famous doll maker made this ridiculously expensive baby doll, quaintly named Hilda, in 1914. Both its hair and teeth are from human origin. This doll still has its original clothes and has been maintained excellently. This close to a century old Hilda baby is probably one of the costliest dolls ever made by the German artist Kestner.
