A scientific study done by Northwestern University reveals that “Glue Mussels” which is used to stick the surfaces of rocks has inspired researchers to create a sealant that could be used for repairing the ruptures and holes on fetal membrane during pregnancy. The mussel inspired sealant was tested on animals and was found to be both bio-compatible and effective at sealing the tiny holes which could be really dangerous and lead to the leakage of the amniotic fluid resulting in premature labor and termination.

Fetal membrane – Fetal Membrane is the structure that surrounds the developing fetus.

The research was done by Phillip B. Messersmith, who was one of the study’s leaders and is professor of biomedical engineering at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Currently Messersmith and his colleagues are testing the mechanical qualities of Sealant
