In the history of culture the discovery of zero will always stand out as one of the greatest single achievements of the human race.

-Tobias Danzig

Have You Ever Imagined The World Without Zero ? If no Then Let me tell You the Whole Story. The Numbers were invented 1000 years before Zero as the people at that time never feel important to have a number with no Value.

The Need of Zero was not significant at the time especially when numbers were used only to count something or simple operations.

Number Systems Without Zero :-

Egyptian :- Egyptian hieroglyphics were used as early as 3500 B.C.E. Even without zero, Egyptians became masters of mathematics.

Greeks:- The Greeks brought mathematics to its highest point in ancient times.Around 500 BC, the Greeks developed a newer more sophisticated system

Romans:- It was a step back from the less sophisticated Egyptian system. The Roman 87, LXXXVII, requires seven symbols, with several repeats

Babylonians:- Babylonians used a system of two symbols Base 60.
They sometimes used a space to represent an empty position.By about 200 C.E., they used a pair of small triangles to represent an empty position.
Babylonians never actually invented a zero, they made an important first step!

Till This Time Lot Of number systems were discovered in Various parts of the world and Being Used Successfully. But ZERO did not get birth Till Now.

After That World came To Know About Indian number System:-

Indian Culture culture had a positional number system in base ten. They used a dot to represent an empty place Sunya which meant “empty” was the name for this dot At this point, the early zero was a placeholder and an aid in computation By 500 C.E., the Hindus use a small circle to represent Zero!
This circle was recognized as a numeral.

How World Came To Know About Zero :- Arabic people recognized the value of the Hindu system .They adapted the numerals and computation
Then spread the ideas in their travels .The zero was named with the Arabic word sifz. The actual word “zero” came from Italy

Leonardo of Pisa, known as Fibonacci Learned Hindu-Arabic numerals from his Arabic tutors .He brought the news of zero and new computational methods to Europe in his book

Laws Against Zero :- Europeans resisted Hindu-Arabic numerals
It seemed strange. The numerals, including zero, were not accepted
Florence, Italy, passed a law prohibiting the use of the numerals
Slowly, the numbers became accepted.

We are fortunate to have the zero now. Because building computers and software would not have been possible without a zero-> binary system. Great article by the way.

Ancient Indians excelled in both language and number applications.
Grammar relating Singilar, dual and plural are integral part of Sanskrit.Number sense adding makes a sentence resonably precise and greately sensible. Number and language are thus related to one another. Number adds precise condition to sentence, which also makes it sensible!
    Count 1, 2, 3, 4…infinity is a usual one to one count!
Count 0, 1, 2, 3…(infinity-1, which is an all 9s number) is ancient Indian Count which is one less than each number of usual count. Zero is in it.
Zero is an ancient Indian knowledge and Vedic sutra that has been disclosed by Shri Jagadguru Sankaracharya reveals it.
A related number number application helps us to mentally compute (relating zero-start 2D square matrix positions) any number of digit answers by relating appropriate matrix positions.
Google search Vedicmatrix zero for details of related number application!

To be honest I did not know there were so many number systems, nor systems without zero. The only reference I had are the Roman numerals, but evidently the Hindus and Egyptians are much older.
